Opening of AusAID Africa long term scholarships
AusAID scholarships for African students commencing their Masters or PhDs in 2014 are now open for application.
Application for Masters level awards
Applications for Masters level study close on 14th December 2012. Up to 380 Masters level awards will be available for eligible African candidates from the following 28 countries for postgraduate studies commencing in 2014:

Focus sectors for Masters scholarships reflect areas which have been identified as priorities by partner governments and in which Australia is recognised as having world-leading expertise and experience.
Current priority sectors include:
- • Agriculture and Food Security
- • Health
- • Natural Resource Management including Mining Governance
- • Public Policy
- • Water and Sanitation

Application for PhD level awards
Applications for PhD level study close on 31st March 2013. Up to 20 PhD level awards will be available to candidates from eligible African countries for agriculture-related studies commencing in Australia in 2014.
The scholarships are for study in Australia at an Australian university. However, it is preferred that any field research is undertaken primarily in Africa. To be eligible, African candidates must be a citizen of one of the following 22 countries:

The research topics of successful applicants will demonstrate a contribution to improving food security in Africa through increasing agricultural productivity, improving rural livelihoods through functioning of markets and trade and/or building the resilience of communities most vulnerable to food insecurity.
In addition, topics should ideally demonstrate relevance to the research or development objectives of one or more of the research partnerships being funded by Australia in Africa: (ACIAR, including the Sustainable Intensification of Maize and Legumes project with SIMLESA; CSIRO – CORAF; CSIRO – BecA and the Australian International Food Security Centre).

Students who have attained an overall IELTS of 5 may be offered an English language training award, but must achieve an overall IELTS 6.5 before an offer of a provisional scholarship is made. Candidates applying for the PhD programs need only provide “in principle” agreement from a prospective supervisor. More detailed information is available from Australia Awards in Africa.
